Through a long period of observation and analysis, Fuxi, the first human ancestor of the Chinese nation, used the different characteristics of all things to divide everything in the universe into eight categories. Using the images, he created eight abstract three-line symbols to represent each category, which is the source for all Chinese culture, the Primitive Eight Trigrams. Thus, the Eight Trigrams encompass all things and their basic characteristics. King Wen of the Zhou Dynasty (Zhou Wen Wang), on the basis of Emperor Fuxi’s Eight Trigrams on the created the Acquired Eight Trigrams, and evolved the Eight Trigrams into 64 hexagrams, each hexagram was tied to the hexagram divinatory interpretations (Decisions). From these, King Wen’s son the Duke of Zhou (Zhou Zi Wen) composed the Yao Texts. Moreover, after making the connection between these things (Trigrams, Image), the result of six judgments: prosperity, luck, misery, severity, regret and blame can be clearly indicated. This is the "Changes of Zhou (Zhou Yi),” which is also "I Ching." Confucius' "The Great Commentary (Yi Chuan)" is the system interpretation of “Changes of Zhou (Zhou Yi), ” which is the “I Ching” of the Ten Wings. Confucius deepened the relationship between the objective image, the trigrams, the present object, and image type, and the judgments which are misfortune, good fortune, humiliation, adversity, regret, and fault, especially the "Image" and "Shuo Trigram" etc., define the following misfortune, good fortune, humiliation, adversity, regret, and fault, more explicitly.
Photography is to putting images into photographs. If the photography uses "I Ching" the present object of the trigram, and image type etc., that would ultimately place the judgments of "I Ching” into the photographs, which means that the photographs would have the implications of misfortune, good fortune, humiliation, adversity, regret, and fault. If a photograph is just a reflection of an objective image, then objective images are another form of trigrams. If photographs are the trigrams of the present image, image type, and yi image, then the implication of the photograph is the trigram of the judgment, and the object itself, the color, the time, the digits, the symbols and the yin and yang, the five elements, etc. all fitting together. So if we believe this type of photography is and “I Ching Photography work of art”, then this type of photography is called “I Ching Photography.” Therefore, in developing I Ching Photography, besides following the basic rules of the art of photography, we must also follow the “Changes of Zhou” with good fortune, while avoiding the disadvantages. These excellent I Ching Photographs will not only be a beautiful art piece, they will also be auspicious instruments. The blending of I Ching philosophy and photography embodies the true manifestation of bringing together heaven and man; it also is the perfect combination of modern photography and ancient Chinese culture.
